FastPictureViewer was designed to speed up the workflow of professional photographers and imaging professionals with full color management, industry-standard rating functions, RGB histogram and EXIF windows, instant magnifier, IPTC editing, batch file processing, web-publishing and more.
Designed with professional photographers in mind, FastPictureViewer is an image viewer and culling tool engineered for previewing and rating digital images faster. The program features full ICC color management with support for profiled monitors and the latest color engine technology, instant GPU-assisted zooming and panning, and single-keystroke copy/move/delete functions, plus industry-standard Adobe XMP and Microsoft Photo rating, ideal for fast reviewing, culling and rating of very large quantities of images.
FastPictureViewer Pro displays shooting data (shutter speed, F-stop, ISO, exposure compensation) and RGB histogram in seamless, floating windows updated in real-time and features a built-in external program launcher, all in a slick and uncluttered user-interface. An USB tethering function is also available and works with all cameras fully compatible with the MTP/PTP transfer protocol, which includes most Nikon DSLRs, with optional auto-prefixing of downloaded files.
Additional functions are provided through optional plug-ins, including advanced batch file processing with point-and-click rule system, allowing file selection from a number of parameters relevant to photography, including EXIF data, GPS position, speed, heading or altitude, file type, size, orientation etc. Action can be performed on the selected files includes batch renaming, copy, move, delete, export to JPEG, send to FTP server and more.
Batch IPTC editing with search-as-you-type dictionary-assisted keyword entry and GPS reverse-geocoding is supported. All the IPTC Core fields are supported and the data can be embedded within standard image formats (JPEG, TIFF) either as IIM or IPTC4XMP, as well as written to industry-standard Adobe XMP sidecar files.
A web-publishing subsystem is also included, allowing users to publish photos directly to pro-grade photo-sharing websites such as Facebook, SmugMug, Photoshelter and Zenfolio (with more sites to come in the future). The publishing function is able to perform on-the-fly format conversions to JPEG when necessary (so it can seamlessly publish RAW, TIFF and CGI files such as OpenEXR, DDS etc to websites that normally don't support these formats), as well as automatic color-space conversion to sRGB for consistent color viewing across all web browsers and devices.
Users can control the type of metadata included in published JPEG files: EXIF, XMP, IPTC, GPS and copyright information can be enabled or disabled individually. Files can optionally be recompressed on-the-fly to optimize the upload size, or scaled-down to a specified dimension for screen viewing or printing at a given size.
The publishing system can upload files to multiple web sites simultaneously, each with their own parameters and settings: it is for example possible to upload original files to a given web site and downscaled copies to another web site at the same time. Site-specific functionality, such as for example SmugMug's SmugVault storage facility, are fully supported.
A unique plugin called the GeoClustering Utility allows users to group images together by spatial or temporal proximity, using GPS coordinates or EXIF timestamps. The plugin looks at all images at once and finds those that were taken in close vicinity. It then create a new folder for each identified cluster and copies/moves the images taken together in their own subfolder.
The software supports fast previewing of raw image formats such as Nikon NEF, Canon CR2, Panasonic RW2, Olympus ORF and Adobe DNG through bundled raw codecs (400+ camera models supported). Standard image formats such as TIFF/MTIFF, JPEG, HD Photo, PNG, GIF, BMP and ICO are supported.
The program has been translated to several languages, including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish and is able to browse folders and images who's names can be written in any language, thanks to its support for the Unicode standard.
One of Germany's largest computer publications, "c't Magazin fur Computertechnik", dubbed FastPictureViewer "the Porsche of image viewers" and described it as "unbeatably fast" in a roundup that included several other image viewers and image editors (issue 19/2008). In another article from the same magazine, FastPictureViewer Professional was listed among the tools available to photographers considering an Adobe DNG based workflow (issue 05/2009).
FastPictureViewer is one of the firsts of a new breed of hardware accelerated desktop applications and delivers unprecedented speed and ease of use with native support for hardware features such as GPU and 64-bit multi-processing.
The optional FastPictureViewer Codec Pack add-in adds JPEG auto-rotation to Windows Explorer, Photoshop PSD support, as well as support for a dozen additional file formats in addition to 380+ camera RAW formats.
